Moles are growths on the skin that are usually brown or black. Moles can appear anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups. Most moles, especially facial moles appear in early childhood and during the first 30 years of a person’s life. It is normal to have between 10-40 moles by adulthood. Moles usually change slowly, becoming raised and/or changing colour.

Types of Moles

1. Congenital moles appear at birth
2. Dysplastic nevi are moles that are larger than average, are irregular in shape and have an uneven colour. These moles have a greater chance of developing into skin cancer

Examine your skin with a mirror or ask someone to help you. Pay special attention to areas of the skin that are often exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, chest, neck, face, and ears.

What We Can Do For You

Our dermatologist will be looking for the following important characteristics to consider when evaluating your moles:

• Asymmetry – one half of the mole does not match the other half
• Border – the border or edges of the mole are ragged, blurred or irregular
• Colour – the colour of the mole is not the same throughout or has shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white or red.
• Diameter – the diameter of a mole is larger than the eraser of a pencil
• Evolution – the mole is changing in size, shape or colour.

Surgery is the standard treatment for cancerous moles. The extent of the mole removal procedure is determined by the thickness of the tumor, i.e. how deeply it has invaded the skin. It is necessary to remove not only the tumor, but also some of the normal skin around it, and the fatty tissue beneath it.

The Future

Remember that the vast majority of moles are not dangerous. If you see any signs of change in an existing mole, may it be a facial mole or a mole anywhere on your skin, have it checked by our dermatologist – regular monitoring of your moles and getting regular checkups is the best course of action.
